The Wooden Boat Stage is back and bigger than ever

Created by Women in Boat Building (WIBB), the Wooden Boatbuilders’ Trade Association (WBTA) and the Boat Building Academy (BBA), the Wooden Boat Stage, sponsored by Sykes Timber, returns to the Southampton International Boat Show with its biggest programme yet. Alongside inspiring talks, live demonstrations and practical sessions, the new Wooden Boat Stage Afloat extends the experience into the marina, where visitors can step aboard a carefully curated collection of historic and classic vessels.

Mike Broome

Mike Broome is a tutor at the Boat Building Academy with extensive expertise in traditional wooden boatbuilding. After training in Lyme Regis, he co-founded Simmons & Broome Ltd, building and restoring wooden boats. He now shares decades of craftsmanship and practical knowledge with the next generation of boatbuilders. Appearing Friday 25th September.

Simon Crawford

Marineware Ltd is a specialist supplier of marine coatings, composites and technical solutions. With extensive experience supporting boatbuilders, boatyards and marine professionals, Simon brings practical industry knowledge and a strong understanding of the products and techniques used to protect, maintain and restore wooden boats. Appearing Saturday 19th September.

Hannah Cuncliffe

Director of National Historic Ships UK since 2017. Hannah previously ran a freelance research and consultancy business after completing an MA in Maritime History. In her spare time, she sails a 116-year-old yacht with her family. Appearing Saturday 19th September.

Sarah Curtis

Sarah grew up sailing her family's Colchester Smack, inspiring a lifelong connection to traditional boats. Since 2005, she has managed Harry King's Boatyard with her husband, Gus, combining her background in education with a passion for preserving maritime heritage. Together, they continue to restore and sail classic vessels. Appearing Wednesday 23rd September.

Colin Henwood

Traditional boatbuilder specialising in re-building and building fine Thames launches. Colin established his own boatyard near Henley on Thames in the early 1980's. He is currently the chair of the Wooden Boatbuilders Trade Association. Appearing Friday 18th, Monday 21st and Wednesday 23rd & Sunday 27th September.

Belinda Joslin

Belinda Joslin is the founder of Women in Boat Building (WiBB), a community supporting and championing women across the marine trades. A former Spirit Yachts finisher, she is passionate about wooden boats, maritime skills and creating a more inclusive industry. She is also the creator of the Wooden Boat Stage. Appearing Friday 18th and Sunday 20th September.

Daniel Lee

Award-winning boatbuilder, designer and educator. Also now the Hull Specialist for the Apache 555 project. Dan is responsible for the repair, maintenance and optimisation of Apache’s wooden hull. Appearing Sunday 27th September.

Matt Lis

Mat Lis runs Woodbridge & Waldringfield Boatyards, two historic yards on Suffolk’s River Deben. With boatbuilding roots dating back to 1889, the skilled team specialises in the construction, maintenance, repair and restoration of both traditional wooden boats and modern vessels, combining time-honoured craftsmanship with contemporary techniques. Appearing Saturday 19th September.

Dr. Obioma Oji

Co-founder & Design Director at BlueTree Boat Builders (2023) with responsibility for R&D, innovation, production and their Harmony sustainability initiative. She is also a Director of Women in Boat Building (2024) which promotes and connects women working hands-on in the marine trades. Appearing Friday 25th September.

Will Reed

Director of the Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis, Will helps to pass on knowledge through first class training. Having started woodwork as a child, Will remains a passionate maker and has worked professionally as a furniture designer/maker and boat builder. Appearing Friday 18th, Saturday 19th, Sunday 20th and Monday 21st & Sunday 27th September.

Katy Stickland

A journalist for over 25 years, Katy Stickland co-founded and ran the marine services company Store Bay Marine Services in Tobago with her husband John. They lived aboard their S&S 34 in Store Bay, before returning to the UK. Appearing Thursday 24th September.

Bob Sykes

Bob Sykes is Managing Director of Sykes Timber and has led the business for over 40 years, developing it into one of the UK’s leading independent timber importers, merchants and processors. Serving merchants, boatbuilders, manufacturers and the construction industry, Sykes is recognised for its extensive stockholding, specialist machining capabilities and reliable nationwide supply of quality timber products. Appearing Tuesday 22nd & Saturday 26th September.

Carl Richardson

Carl has worked across the marine world for over 20 years. A champion and paid-up, heart-over-head coveter of all things classic design, he is the editor of Classic Boat magazine and believes that wooden boats are the past, present and future of yachting. Appearing Friday 18th September.

Hanneke Boon

Hanneke Boon is head of James Wharram Designs and has spent decades shaping the legacy of pioneering catamaran designer James Wharram. A lifelong sailor, artist and co-designer, she has created Wharram's iconic design drawings since the 1970s, helping preserve and evolve this influential approach to multihull design. Appearing Saturday 26th September.

Sue Pennison

As a lifelong sailor, I've raced and sailed traditional and modern boats, developing a passion for ropework, rigging and traditional hand skills. I'll share how this led me to rig historic vessels, become Chair of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, and preserve maritime craftsmanship for future generations. Appearing Friday 18th, Saturday 19th, Sunday 20th, Tuesday 22nd & Thursday 24th September.

Mike Beckett

For 40 years I've owned and maintained Bonita, an 1888 Morecambe Bay Prawner, sailing her around Britain twice and to the Baltic. I'll share my experiences and explain how the Old Gaffers Association helps preserve traditional gaff and lug-rigged boats through racing, rallies and practical support for owners. Appearing Saturday 19th September.

Dr Victoria Preston

Having lived in Cowes since 2014 after much of my career in Switzerland, I'll share my passion for classic boats and maritime heritage. As Deputy Chair of the Classic Boat Museum and former co-owner of the 1924 West Solent One Design Suvretta, I'll explore the importance of preserving our historic vessels. Appearing Saturday 19th September.

Roberta Bonometti

Roberta Bonometti is Vice Commodore of the Sea Scamp Syndicate, leading public relations, fundraising and wood restoration while helping preserve this historic yacht. She combines communications expertise with hands-on conservation to strengthen membership, support Sea Scamp's future and ensure she continues to sail for generations to come. Appearing Saturday 19th September.

Neville Khambatta

Neville runs the Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust at Hunter's Yard, preserving the last fleet of traditional gaff-rigged hire yachts on the Norfolk Broads. A lifelong sailing enthusiast, he combines decades of hands-on experience with a passion for restoring and racing traditional boats, helping keep this unique maritime heritage alive. Appearing Sunday 20th September.

Jess CLay

Jess is Business Operations Coordinator at Classic Sailing, helping people discover hands-on voyages aboard traditional vessels worldwide. From deckhand to First Mate, boatbuilding trainee and maritime podcast co-host, she's passionate about keeping traditional sailing alive by making maritime skills, stories and experiences accessible, inspiring and relevant to new generations. Appearing Sunday 20th September.

Henry Chamberlain

Henry Chamberlain is the founder of Coastal Exploration Company, based in Wells-next-the-Sea. Inspired by a lifelong connection to the sea, he created the company to reconnect people with Britain's coastline through traditional sailing, authentic adventures and shared experiences, making coastal exploration accessible while celebrating the country's rich maritime heritage. Appearing Sunday 20th September.

Alan Fave

Alan has spent many years in boatbuilding, developing extensive hands-on experience across the industry. Through his work with the Pioneer Sailing Trust, he helps preserve historic vessels while supporting sail training and boatbuilding programmes that equip young people with practical skills, confidence and opportunities through maritime heritage. Appearing Monday 21st, Tuesday 22nd & Wednesday 23rd September.

Ela Keegan

Ela Keegan grew up in a family of sailors and windsurfers, inspiring a career that spans tall ships, research vessels and coastal heritage. As Schools, Youth and Community Coordinator at the Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust, she champions sailing and traditional crafts as powerful tools for wellbeing, leadership and maritime heritage. Appearing Tuesday 22nd & Thursday 24th September.

James Otter

Author of Do Make, James has been handcrafting hollow wooden surfboards for over 15 years and guiding people to make their own during workshop courses. Appearing Wednesday 23rd September.

Jamie Clay

Driven by a lifelong passion for traditional wooden boats, I'll share my journey from restoring my family's gaff yawl to training at the IBTC and working on Thames barges, Essex sailing smacks and classic yachts. Along the way, I've restored renowned designs and built a dozen Iain Oughtred boats. Appearing Wednesday 23rd September.

Jemma Thompson

Jemma Thompson is an award-winning artist and traditional signwriter with more than 25 years' experience. Specialising in hand-painted lettering, gold leaf and heritage craftsmanship, she combines traditional techniques with contemporary commissions, while teaching and championing the preservation of this skilled and historic craft. Appearing Thursday 24th September.

Andy Peters

Andy Peters founded Maritima Woodcarving in 1990 to help preserve the art of the ship carver. With decades of experience, he has researched and created carvings for replica ships, restored historic figureheads for museums and collectors, and written two books celebrating the craft and its rich maritime heritage. Appearing Friday 25th September.

Barb Trailer

Barb Trailer is Festival Director of the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, one of North America's largest celebrations of wooden boats and maritime culture. She is passionate about bringing people together through traditional crafts, sailing and storytelling, helping keep wooden boat culture vibrant and inspiring future generations. Appearing Friday 25th September.

Camilla Morelli

My name is Camilla and I’m a professional sailmaker with twenty years’ experience. I specialise in making and painting sails for the traditional boats that still sail the Venice lagoon today. I’d love to help people discover this tradition and keep it alive! Appearing Saturday 26th September.

Audrey Fasquelle

Audrey Fasquelle is a professional marquetry artist and tutor, formally trained in France and now working in luxury automotive on England's South Coast. A Master Furniture Maker and Furniture Makers' Company 60 for 60 award recipient, she teaches traditional marquetry techniques, helping preserve and share this intricate heritage craft. Appearing Sunday 27th September.

Peter Bonham-Christie

Current custodian and driver of Apache 555. An entrepreneur and engineer, he has raced in various powerboat classes and championships around the world. Appearing Sunday 27th September.

Liza Kaluzhskaia

Founder of Metsameri, an independent practice building impact, learning and data infrastructure for community-led ocean and environmental organisations. Liza specialises in data analytics, citizen science, and engagement strategies, helping organisations evidence the impact of their work and connect across disciplines. Appearing Friday 25th September.

Vicki Samuels

Vicki Samuels: Treasurer of the Britannia Sailing Trust. Vicki brings a focus on heritage and social infrastructure, discussing the restoration of end-of-life timber vessels and the community networks required to keep wooden fleets alive for future generations. Appearing Saturday 19th & Friday 25th September.

Colin Messer

Colin served his boatbuilding apprenticeship at Souters of Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. Souters were pioneers of cold moulding mahogany planked hulls and revolutionised the construction of racing yachts and power boats, which were leaving everything else in their wake. 48 years later, Colin still uses this method on many of his restorations. Appearing Sunday 20th September.

Brenden George

Brenden George is a Canadian citizen and joined the Boat Building Academy’s 40-week course using the Youth Mobility Scheme. He left banking behind to build wooden boats and excelled. Graduating top of his class he’s now working at Spirit Yachts in Suffolk. When he’s not at work he’s often found sailing and working on his little Hallberg-Rassy which he lives on in Ipswich. Appearing Sunday 20th & Thursday 24th September.

Thomas Smith

Thomas Smith: As Lead Designer at Spirit Yachts, Thomas is the guardian of Spirit’s design DNA and the company’s legacy, which currently spans over 30 years. Passionate about blending classic lines with modern materials and the ultimate luxury guest experience, Tom is a visionary creative. Appearing Sunday 20th September.

Hamish Cook

Hamish is the Technical Applications Manager at Wessex Resins & Adhesives Ltd. with 25+ years industry experience providing customers with technical support on the use of products across the company’s portfolio of brands including WEST SYSTEM® Epoxy products. Appearing Saturday 19th September.

Stephen Dennett

Stephen Dennett leads Dennett Boat Builders, continuing his family's tradition of award-winning craftsmanship. Restoring and maintaining more than 80 wooden boats each year, he is passionate about preserving maritime heritage. Through festivals, regattas and industry involvement, he champions traditional boatbuilding and inspires future generations to value this enduring craft. Appearing Tuesday 22nd September.

Millie Macdonald

Millie Macdonald discovered her passion for boatbuilding while building skin-on-frame canoes and kayaks with her dad. After training at the Boat Building Academy and helping build a traditional carvel fishing boat, she returned as Machine Shop Manager, where she shares her skills and inspires future generations of boatbuilders. Appearing Tuesday 22nd & Thursday 24th September.

Ariana Cottam

Ariana Cottam trained at the BBA before joining Woodbridge & Waldringfield Boatyard in Suffolk as a junior boat builder. On her course, she commissioned and built a 14ft Gartside clinker boat with a lug rig. The larch planking was sourced from a single tree found locally to the BBA in Devon, with the remainder of the boat built using oak and chestnut from the UK. Appearing Tuesday 22nd September.

Cat Poppensika

Cat leads the Heritage Funded Woodworking and Gender Project at the Sylva Foundation, helping widen access to heritage woodworking and tackle gender imbalance within the craft. Combining project management with a passion for timber, hand tools and furniture making, she champions traditional skills and inspires the next generation of woodworkers. Appearing Wednesday 23rd September.

Jenisha Mistry

I am an apprentice Shipwright at Berthon Boat Company and I applied after completing my Fine Art degree. I wanted further training and to consolidate my self taught knowledge from working with wood on my degree. I decided to stay down south and found this apprenticeship with the help of BPC college and I am now developing a well rounded and traditional set of skills. Appearing Thursday 24th September.

Joe Sykes

Joe Sykes is Director of Sykes Timber, one of the UK's leading independent timber importers and processors. An expert in sustainable forestry and ethical timber sourcing, he combines traditional timber knowledge with modern processing while championing responsible sourcing that supports skilled craftsmanship, local communities and global biodiversity. Appearing Friday 25th September.

Ben Harris

Ben Harris has been building traditional wooden boats in Cornwall since 2005, turning a lifelong passion for woodworking into a career. With a family heritage rooted in forestry, timber and the sea, he combines traditional craftsmanship with decades of hands-on experience creating and restoring classic wooden boats. Appearing Saturday 26th September.

Mark Matthews

Mark has been a sailmaker for over 35 years. As well as making and repairing sails, Mark is a tutor of modern and traditional sail making courses with the BBA. Appearing Sunday 27th September.

Adrian Gooderham

Adrian has spent more than 20 years at Spirit Yachts, where he now serves as Yard Manager overseeing the build of modern classic sail and motor yachts. A master craftsman with a passion for quality, he combines design expertise, sustainable timber sourcing and leadership to deliver exceptional wooden boats. Appearing Sunday 20th September.

Katie Sewell

Katie is a Technical Advisor at Wessex Resins & Adhesives Ltd. bringing 5+ years marine industry experience. Now provides customers with technical support on the use of products across the company’s portfolio of brands including WEST SYSTEM® Epoxy products. Mary Montagu-Scott

Mary Montagu-Scott is the Director of Bucklers Hard Maritime Museum and passionate about promoting and sharing Maritime Heritage, sailing and historic ships. Appearing Sunday 27th September.

Bonny Brookes

Bonny Brookes has lived on and renovated boats for almost 7 years, with 3 years specialising in marine electrics. When she's not on an electrics job, you can find her hosting workshops at The Marine Emporium, the new location of her boat chandlery business founded in 2025. Appearing Thursday 24th September.

Woodbridge and Waldringfield Boatyard

Over the course of the show, several of the Woodbridge and Waldringfield Boatyard's 7 boatbuilders and 5 apprentices will take turns on the stand and stage. With many and varied careers, all will be happy to share their stories, knowledge and advice. Gary Thompson

Sophia Harding

Sophia Harding from Portsmouth was just 17 when she joined the BBA’s 40-week course with a women’s bursary. Determined to enter a ‘practical’ career Sophia dropped out of sixth form, taught herself to sail and bought an old boat, which she single-handedly restored. Sophia is now restoring large wooden boats at the Elephant Yard in Southampton as well as working on her own boat, a Westerly 25. Appearing Thursday 24th September.

Paul Dyer

As the Boat Building Academy's Operations Manager, Paul Dyer is passionate about delivering excellence and inspiring others to enter the boat building industry. A graduate of the BBA himself, Paul is committed to giving young people the same opportunities that shaped his own career. Over the past three years, the BBA has welcomed over 160 local school children onto courses and work experience opportunities. Appearing Tuesday 22nd September.

Hannah Stowe

Hannah is a marina, marine biologist and writer, originally from Pembrokeshire in West Wales. Her debut non-fiction 'Move like Water' has been translated into 5 languages and received the Banff Mountain Centre Adventure travel award. She sails 'Larry', a 119 year old gaff cutter, of whom she is the current custodian. Appearing Friday 25th & Saturday 26th September.
